Prince Rupert [of the Rhine, 1619–1682] was an inventor, artist, and soldier. He was fluent in virtually all the major European languages and excelled at mathematics. Soldiers were frightened of the large poodle he took with him during battles, believing that it had supernatural powers.As we can see, Prince Rupert modeled his appearance after that of his poodle:
